Alternative data
Data about economic activity generated as a by-product of something else, used to observe the world before official figures report it.
Alternative data is information that was not produced to be an economic indicator: vessel positions, satellite imagery, shipping manifests, permits, job postings, sensor networks. Its appeal is timing rather than exclusivity - most of it is public or licensable, and it describes activity as it happens rather than after a reporting body has collected, revised and released it.
The work is almost entirely in the joining. A raw feed of vessel positions or images is not a signal; it becomes one only when it is resolved onto the specific companies, facilities and shipments a decision concerns, which is an entity resolution problem that has to be solved before any analysis begins. That is why most of the cost of an alternative-data programme is integration rather than acquisition.
It carries obligations as well. Coverage is uneven and changes over time, sources have their own biases and gaps, and anything tested against history needs a point-in-time record to be tested honestly. Used carelessly it produces a confident series describing an artefact of the collection method.
Evidence that keeps pace with the decision.
